Went Down Swinging

It was a close game, but in the end, Mizzou lost to UConn. Although it was a hearbreaking loss, I can guarantee every MU Tiger watching appreciated the effort and would agree that this was a phenomenal season worthy of a standing ovation. Coach Mike Anderson pretty much summed it up when he said, "They brought back a sense of pride in Missouri basketball that hadn’t been there for a while. For that, I thank them."

Yes, I thank you, too. Good job, Mizzou!

Road Rage

Now, it's no secret that I suffer from random outbursts of anger behind the wheel, but I feel as though I completely had the right to fly off the handle a little bit today. It was probably not the best day for me to be driving, but with a dentist appointment scheduled, I really had no choice.

On my way to the appointment, I found myself sitting at a red light behind some car with handicap plates. Before I know it I feel a push behind me and realize a huge semi is nudging my car forward. The first time it happened, I thought it was a fluke. The second time, I started to panic because it was seriously pushing my car forward and I thought I was going straight into the car in front of me. I felt like I was in one of those horror movies where the crazy truck driver is trying to get you off the road and kill you. Yes, I watch too many scary movies.

Anyway, what do you do in that situation? I started honking my horn, which probably freaked out the handicapped driver in front of me, but I didn't know what else to do. Luckily the light turned green and the car in front of me zoomed off--probably freaked out by me and my incessant honking. You're probably wondering why I did not pull over and make the truck driver do the same thing. In order for you to understand why I couldn't you have to see where this all took place. There was no shoulder and no way stopping would have been safe for anyone.

When I started moving again I realized I was about to hit another red light so I switched lanes to avoid being stuck in a car sandwich again. I ended up losing the truck and praying that no damage was done to my precious car. The minute I had the chance, I pulled into a gas station to investigate. Thankfully, there were only a few minor scratches to accompany the existing ones and no major dents or breaks. At that point I let out a sigh of relief and the knots in my stomach came undone.

When I got to the dentist's office I ended up parking in front of a meter that was broken. Although I didn't realize it until after I put two quarters in it. I sat there for a minute cursing the meter as its flashing display screen mocked me, then just left and went to the office. There were no other spots to park, so I really had no choice but to suck it up no matter what happened. Unfortunately, my dentist freaked me out a little when she told me their meter maids were pretty tough, so I ended up going back to the meter and putting a note that said "Broken Meter." I mean, what exactly are you supposed to do in that situation? Wait for the meter maid and tell her what's going on? Fortunately, when I later returned to my car, there was no ticket.

My last incident occurred as I was driving home from the train station. I was sitting at a red light again when the car behind me started honking. I looked all around trying to figure out why this fool was honking, but I saw nothing weird. The whole time he was behind me he kept honking, which made me completely paranoid. Were my brake lights not working? Did I have a flat tire? Was there a killer hiding in my back seat? (Again, too many scary movies.) I had no damn clue. I finally got him off my butt but still couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong with my car.

When I got home I tried testing my brake lights, because I couldn't see anything else physically wrong with my car. I don't know if you've ever tried it, but testing your brake lights by yourself is a little difficult. It's easy enough to look in the rearview mirror, press the brakes and see the lights brighten. The hard part is sitting in a well-lit garage trying to figure out if all the bulbs are working and if the one in your rear window is actually lighting up. Using a long pole and a paper towel (don't ask), I managed to figure out that every light was emitting some sort of red glow. So, I have no idea why the hell the person behind me in the Honda Ridgeline was honking.

Today was not a good day for me to be on the road. The drivers of New Jersey are definitely out to get me.

One last thing...Mizzou...Elite 8...woohoo! No matter what happens tomorrow against UConn, I'm proud of my Tigers. M-I-Z...Z-O-U!

The Best Intentions

I start every weekend with the best intentions. I have an agenda of things I want to get done, and when I go to bed Friday night, I honestly feel as if I'll complete the tasks. Then I wake up Saturday morning and find that I just can't bring myself to do anything. Unless I have an appointment scheduled, Saturday ends up being Tivo catch-up day. I plop myself in front of the TV with some waffles and end up wasting the day away in the same position.

So, on Sunday, I'm left with this horrible feeling of needing to get stuff done and before I know it, it's Monday morning and I can't drag myself out of bed to go to work. I know I should be really thankful I have a job (which I am) when so many people don't, but I've been busting my butt day in and day out to keep this job. I feel like in the end, I'm just going to get laid off. Argh.

This past week was a particularly tough work week. Without going into too many whiny details, my boss was a pain and I had way too much stuff to do in a short amount of time. I just have to hang in there for three more weeks. If I can make it until then, I'll have a week off work--that is, if my boss doesn't decide to drive me crazy by calling me about work. Yes, the woman will do it. She's done it before. I got lucky during my last vacation because she was on vacation, too. April 10 cannot get here soon enough. I'm ready to go home to SoCal. I know I was just home in January, but I've been feeling down in the dumps lately and the only thing that brings me out of it is knowing I'll be able to go back soon. I guess it's hard not to feel so depressed, especially given the current state of the country.

So what do I have planned for this vacation? Not much so far. The first priority is to not think of work at all. Then I want to spend some quality time with the puppies. I miss the puppies. And of course I want to spend time with as many people as I can. I miss my people. I also want to check out a comic exhibit. Yes, you read that right. I told you I was going through a comic book phase. Well, it's more like I've become interested in the history of comic books. I read an article on CNN.com about this exhibit at the Skirball Cultural Center in L.A. It looked pretty interesting, so I think I'm going to go up there during the week. Hopefully there won't be too many people. Last year I went to the Superheroes: Fashion & Fantasy exhibit at The Met. It featured superhero costumes from different movies and TV shows and super-hero inspired gowns by big designers. It was very cool to see some of those costumes--especially the one worn by Wonder Woman.

I just really hope the weather is nice while I'm home. Even though California has great weather most of the year, for some reason April Showers always seem to make an appearance. I'm just really tired of winter. It was a rough one, and I'm so glad it's coming to an end. Although, waking up to snow on Friday was not a pleasant surprise. First day of spring and snow? Luckily it didn't stick and melted away by the afternoon. Spring always gives me this feeling that anything is possible. Even though most people see New Year's as a clean slate, I always feel it more in the springtime. I'm much more hopeful during this time of year, more energetic and more compelled to do something or try something new.

OK, time to watch Brothers & Sisters now. Here's hoping this week is better than the last one.

Sweet Things

I have a huge sweet tooth. We're talking insane. I mean, I'd pick cake and ice cream as a meal if given the option. Unfortunately, the reality is one cannot have sweets for every meal, every day of the week. For the sake of my own health and fitness, I've been trying to cut back on my sweets consumption, which is probably why I've been thinking about them a lot lately. So, in an attempt to purge myself of these sweet thoughts, I'm going to highlight some of my favorites right here.

Marie Callender's Strawberry Pie

Every year I look forward to strawberry season, because that means it's strawberry pie season. Instead of birthday cake, I usually request one of these things. If I'm in SoCal at the time, I'll get one. When I couldn't be in SoCal for my birthday, my family sent me parts of the pie so I could piece it together in my kitchen. Why do I love this simple dessert so much? On the outside, it may not look like much, but the fresh sun-ripened strawberries combined with the sweet, sugary sauce and buttery, flaky crust is complete heaven to me. Just give me a pie, a fork and good chick flick, and I'm a happy girl.

Tonnie's Minis Cupcakes

It should be no surprise that my favorite cupcake from this NYC bakery is the Strawberry Twist cupcake. The official description: a swirl of strawberry and golden sponge cake completed with strawberry and buttercream icing. Of all the cupcake places in the city, this one is hands down the best. I've even hauled them across the country a dozen at a time, and they survived and still tasted just as good as if I'd eaten them when I bought them. They're moist and wonderfully delicious. Every person I've introduced these cupcakes to has taken a bite and instantly fallen in love with them. Every person has their favorite. Some love the Chocolate Kiss (chocolate cake inside yellow), others the Golden Heart (red velvet inside yellow), and some the Taste of Coconut. There's a flavor for everyone. If you're ever in NYC, this definitely is a must-visit place if you want a good cupcake. They aren't the prettiest ones on the block, but as we all know, it's what's on the inside that counts.

Milk & Cookies Bakery Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich

I love homemade chocolate chip cookies, and I love ice cream. Put them together, and you've got the best ice cream cookie sandwich ever! And it happens to be at this place. Now, I have to admit, part of the reason why it tastes so good to me is partly because of the bakery itself. It's cute and cozy, as you can see by the photo above, and the minute you walk in it smells like you're in Grandma's kitchen--well, that's if you had a Grandma who baked. Even though it does get a little messy, it's so worth it. Yum!

Cheryl's Cookies

The first time I had these delightfully delicious cookies was when I was working retail at Restoration Hardware. For Christmas, corporate would send a package of these assorted cookies and brownies. OMG! Needless to say, they made a lasting impression the minute I bit into them. For mail-order cookies, these are pretty damn good. When I stepped foot into an actual store in Columbus, Ohio, I found that the the fresh ones were just as good. In fact, they tasted pretty identical to the ones in the box. Normally you can't talk me out of a chocolate chip cookie, but there's just something about Cheryl's frosted sugar cookies.

Heidi's Heavenly Cookies

One day my coworker received a package at work from some company that wanted us to consider them for a partnership. What was in the package? Some of the most decadent cookies I have ever consumed. They were small but packed a huge sugar punch. The Toffee Chocolate Chip Bites were so good, but strong enough to put you into sugar shock. The others were a little more tame, but certainly just as yummy. Again, for mail-order cookies, these rank pretty high.

Petits Fours

These perfect mini cakes are one of my favorite things ever. Sadly, I'm not really sure where my favorite ones come from. Many years ago, my sorority's house mom would order these delightful little things for us. Sadly, she passed away a few years after I graduated and I never got the chance to ask her about these bite-sized delights. So, I've basically been on the search for the best petits fours--or at least come close to the ones at the sorority house. Dragonfly Cakes makes some pretty awesome petits fours. After finding them online one year, my mom and sister sent me an assortment for my birthday. I was pleasantly surprised by these mail-order cakes. But, the petits four that had me moaning and thanking the gods that I'd found it was at Tate's Bake Shop in Southampton. O.M.G. Words could not describe how I felt the first time I experienced this awesome goodness. Sadly, I haven't been to Southampton since that visit and have not had a chance to partake of this mini cake wonder in years. One day, though, one day I will return.

Baskin Robbins Mint Chip Ice Cream

Ask me what my favorite ice cream flavor is and every time I'll tell you that it's mint chip, especially the Baskin Robbins kind. The flakes of chocolate mixed in the green mint ice cream--complete perfection. I'll tolerate the other kinds, but in my eyes this is the ultimate in mint chip goodness. Just give me a spoon and a quart of this stuff then sit me in front of a good scary movie, and again, you have one happy girl. When I'm feeling low, this is usually the first thing I grab to make me feel better.

Buck's Tiger Stripe Ice Cream

Like the Tate's petits four above, this ice cream is a little difficult for me to enjoy since it can only be found in Columbia, Missouri. Yes, my alma mater has it's own ice cream. What else would you expect from a farming school in the Midwest? For more information than you ever wanted to know about this ice cream, click here. It's basically just golden vanilla ice cream with dark chocolate fudge swirled in, but for some reason, it tastes so much better than just plain vanilla drenched in Hershey's chocolate sauce. Every time I go to Columbia, I have to stop at Flat Branch and order a Southwestern Chicken Salad followed by a few scoops of Tiger Stripe Ice Cream. Mmmmmm.

See? I told you I had a sweet tooth.

More of the Same

This weekend started out pretty much like last weekend. I woke my butt up early on Saturday to haul my ass down to the DMV...errrr, I guess it's MVC where I live. I needed to renew my driver's license and this great state does not believe in renewing by mail. Luckily, to my surprise, it didn't take very long. I was in and out of there within 30 minutes. I even brought a book just in case. Turns out, I didn't need it.

After that I went to the post office, stopped at Staples to make a million copies and send a fax, and then I went to Target to get some essentials. All this was done before 11 a.m. It's amazing how productive I feel when I wake up early. Hmmmm...maybe I should do it more often. When I got home, I ate breakfast and even started doing some cleaning. I would have done laundry if I had some quarters, but I think I can get to it this week. To finish off the day I caught up on my Tivo'd shows and watched the Big 12 Championship game.

I know, doesn't my life sound exciting?

I'm really trying to avoid doing anything that will cost me any money since I'm on a tight budget. It's not so bad since there are a ton of things I need to do at home like organize files, separate things out that I want to donate, read books I've started but never finished, respond to emails I've had hanging out in my inbox for months...my list can go on and on.

I did manage to finally watch 300 this weekend. I know, where have I been and why haven't I watched it yet? Anyway, my coworker highly recommended it and let me borrow her copy. I really liked it. Although, it felt like the killing was endless, but I didn't really mind it too much since the guys were very hot. :) Anyway, I enjoyed the story and appreciated the special effects. I don't know why, but I'm developing this new appreciation for comic books and graphic novels. When I was a kid, I think the only comic book I ever read was Archie. Does watching the Batman and Wonder Woman TV shows count? I came across an article a few weeks ago that talked about the Holy Grail of comic books, the first Superman--an unrestored original. Apparently it was going up on the auction block. It was a pretty interesting story.

Nothing noteworthy happened last week. It was basically about work, work and more work. I did see signs for filming on Friday near my office. Apparently it was for a movie called Howl with James Franco and Paul Rudd. Let's see...what else. Every once in a while I go to one of those online dating sites and check out the profiles. Yes, sometimes I think it might be a good idea, but then I read some of those profiles, my stomach turns, and I realize why I haven't signed up myself. Next time I'll pick out the best (meaning lame) ones and post them here. Either these guys sound too good to be true or they're just idiots looking for a booty call. I think one of them even said straight out that he really liked sex as one of his hobbies or interests. OK...I guess I give him points for being honest.

Before this post turns into a rant about how hard it is to find a good man nowadays, I'm going to sign off and go to sleep.

An Hour Makes a Difference

So I'm sitting here staring at the clock and thinking I really should make a move to go to bed. The only problem is I'm not sleepy yet--and my bed has no sheets on it. I decided to do laundry today, which included sheets. Instead of doing any of that, I'm typing away while Nacho Libre is on the TV.

I didn't have a very exciting weekend. I woke up way too early on Saturday morning to get my blood drawn--I thought getting there at 7 would limit my wait time. I was wrong. I was there an hour. Then I went home to eat and shower before I went to my eye doctor appointment. That took over an hour because of issues with my insurance and having my eyes dilated. By the time I walked out of there I was sure I shouldn't get behind the wheel--everything was hazy and the light was killing me. Loved that it was warm this weekend, but the sun's rays were not helping me on the road. Instead of going home, I decided I needed to do some grocery shopping so I could eat. By the time I got home and fed myself, I was so exhausted I had to take a nap. When I woke up, I decided to watch Running with Scissors--disturbing flick, but pretty good.

Today consisted of waking up later than I'd planned, stopping by Best Buy to get a printer cable (and two movies out of the $4.99 bin--I couldn't resist), and then doing a ton of laundry at the laundromat. There really are some interesting people at those places--very good for people watching. Now I'm sitting here laughing randomly at Nacho and finding music to download. I should be making my bed and getting into it.

Yes, I lead a really exciting life. I have to admit, my posts for this blog aren't nearly as interesting as the posts of my past blogs. But then again, I was younger and doing more things. These days I'm perfectly content to hang out at home. That may change when spring and summer come around. There are a lot of things in the city I still haven't experienced, so when the weather gets a little better, I may just make a list and try checking them off--another one of my New Year's resolutions. Now that I think about it, I have quite a few:

1) Eat better & be more active
2) Start a blog/writing again
3) Be better at keeping in touch with people
4) Remember birthdays again
5) Check things off the "Things to Do in NYC" list

OK, so maybe five isn't a whole lot.

Man, I forgot how funny Nacho Libre was--watching the scene where his robe catches on fire and everyone at the monastery finds out he's a wrestler. Anyway, I was going to blog about some interesting products I saw at the Green Expo I went to over a week ago, but I still haven't been able to sort through all the stuff. I took a lot of it home from work on Friday so I could look through it, but I never did. It's tough to think about work on the weekends even though it's the perfect time for me to catch up.

It was funny, when I was gathering all the stuff, I decided I'd clean my desk also. My coworker came in and was caught a little off guard. She said it looked like I was packing up to leave. Well, she was half right. I'm making it easier to get out of there just in case I'm laid off. Everyone keeps telling me that I'm safe and still have a job, but that little part of me just doesn't want to be surprised again. I already went through something like that once. I want to be better prepared this time. Trust me, I'm trying to get a Plan B in the works. Don't be surprised if you see me working at your local Target.

All things considered, I really do like my job and what I do. I think it fits me. Do I wish the environment and some of the people could be a little different? Of course--that's the case at every job. But in terms of the job itself, I do enjoy it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can keep doing it until at least the end of the year.

OK, I suppose that's enough rambling. I'm going to make my bed now.

Snow Day

I'm not a fan of snow. Snow and I have never had a good relationship. So when I woke up this morning and saw inches of accumulation outside my window, well, let's just say I wasn't happy. Getitng bundled up to go outside sucks. Trudging through the snow sucks. Flakes smacking you in the face because the wind is swirling around you sucks. Get the idea? Thought you would.

While children got a snow day and adults opted out of the snowy commute, getting to work wasn't so difficult. Although, waiting for the bus was a pain. I would have taken a picture of the NYC skyline on my commute, but I didn't have the window seat and well, you wouldn't have seen anything except for a white wall. Yeah, not one building could be seen. Here, however is a photo from my office building:

It looked much worse in the suburbs. By the time I got into the city the snow was more dirty slush than white powder. Dirty slush and black ice. Argh. I can't wait until spring.

My Album Cover

My good friend at Perpetual Mixtape posted this fun little activity: What Would Your Album Cover Look Like? Head over there to check out the directions so you can create your own. It basically involves three random search results. Here's the end product of my searches:

I know, it looks like an adult contemporary album filled with love songs. Here are the links to the pages that inspired this album cover: Alibeg River, Such a Method is Love and The Photo.
